Church’s Bold Temptation for Taxation

Church’s Bold Temptation for Taxation

Pastor Jim Garlow isn’t afraid of the IRS and he’s making that known. The leader of the Skyline Wesleyan Church in La Mesa, California will stand on the pulpit on October 7th and openly urge his congregation to vote for certain presidential and congressional candidates. The catch is, doing so could expose his church to being in violation of IRS rules regarding 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. The rules outlined state that any charitable organization can have a political stance on but prohibits acting “on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”

Pulpit Freedom Sunday has been gaining prominence each year since its inception in 2008. On that day, pastors such as Garlow, and as many as 539 others, stand before their congregations and speak in favor of certain political candidates. In Garlow’s case, that puts the $7 million mega-church’s tax exemptions in jeopardy. The IRS has yet to respond to the movement even as some churches openly tape their political sermons and send them to the agency.

Amazon Now Charging Sales Tax in Texas

Amazon Now Charging Sales Tax in Texas

As of July 1, Amazon.com has begun charging Texas residents a sales tax. The online retailer has avoided charging most of its customers sales tax for years, but since the recession, many lawmakers have targeted the seller to fill large budget shortfalls.

While many argue that the new tax charges evens the playing field with local booksellers who must compete with the retail giant, others note that it may benefit Amazon in the long run. The new tax charges could allow Amazon to open more distribution centers across the country, which may bring lower prices and shorter ship times for customers in the future.

Health Care Law Breaks New Tax Ground

Health Care Law Breaks New Tax Ground

For the first time in U.S. history, a tax is set to be imposed when not purchasing anything. Under the new health care law, people who do not purchase health insurance will be forced to pay penalty fees. These same fees were referred to as a “tax” by the Supreme Court on Thursday, forever changing the history of modern taxes in this country.

Opponents of the tax law are calling foul on the penalty and say it is merely a forced tax increase, something the bill’s sponsors vehemently deny. The fact remains, that there are many instances in which you get a tax break for buying something, but this is the first time in American history that you will pay higher taxes for failing to buy a product.
